Snoring And Sleep Apnea: Is Your Snoring A Sign Of Something More Serious?

Snoring is an extremely common problem, one that many people around the world have to deal with.  Snoring can be bothersome to you but also to those around you if you are a problem snorer.  If you are a snorer, you should consider the possibility that you have sleep apnea.  These are not the same conditions and instead snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea can be quite serious which is why doctors are always so eager to get snorers checked up, to ensure there is nothing more serious at play.  The reason that sleep apnea is so serious is because of the dangerous symptoms that are usually associated with the condition.  A person with sleep apnea may experience pauses or breaks in breathing while they are sleeping.  Others will find they wake up scared and in a sweat.

Of course snoring is one of the most commonly associated symptoms and this is why doctors are so inclined to provide further testing to snoring patients.  The most important thing is to be proactive and doctors just want to ensure that your snoring is not a warning sign of something more serious at play.  It is always better to be safe rather than sorry.  After the tests are complete and it is determined as to whether or not you have sleep apnea, if the tests are positive then your doctor will work to figure out what type of sleep apnea it is.

The obstructive sleep apnea or OSA is the most common type of sleep apnea diagnosed today.  This refers to the type of sleep apnea that is caused by an obstruction in the person’s airflow.  The person will usually have a blockage of sorts in their airways either their nose, mouth or both.  The central sleep apnea is considered to be the more dangerous form of this condition and one that you must take much more seriously.

Anyone who snores should consider the possibility that it could be a warning sign of a sleep apnea condition.  It is usually not life threatening but it can be.  Sleep apnea can have serious results on a person’s health if left untreated and that includes anything from sleep disturbances to high blood pressure and learning problems.  The earlier you get started on treatment the better chances of success you have.
